Circus Stars - The Summer Reading Challenge

The national Summer Reading Challenge, coordinated by The Reading Agency, is run in 97% of UK public libraries.

The Summer Reading Challenge is run in conjunction with libraries targeting 4 to 11 year olds and challenges them to read 6 books during the summer holidays. The website, designed and built by e-bloc, keeps the young readers motivated and inspired with guest appearances from Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson and Michael Rosen.

While the site provides a fully interactive experience and pushes the boundaries using web cam movement recognition to power the juggling game, there is a fully accessible DDA complaint variant running behind so that anyone with assistive technologies or restricted browser could join in the fun as well.

With 760,000 children aged 4-11 taking part, the Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest national reading initiative. It runs in libraries throughout the summer holidays, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children's reading. The challenge is simple - to read six or more library books over the summer.

"[The Challenge] has really helped my children turn the corner in their reading- from it being a chore to being a pleasure. It has made a huge difference to all our lives!"

Parent of 8 year old, Essex
